Case study
I. Prevailing System

2x36W FTL (Low Loss Magnetic Ballast) 82 261
1x36W FTL (Polyester Filled Magnetic Ballast) 46 190
3x36W CFL (Low Loss Magnetic Ballast) 126 31
2x9W CFL (Polyester Filled Magnetic Ballast) 28 155
2x18W CFL (Low Loss Magnetic Ballast) 41 36

II. Improvements Suggested TopΛ
    1. To save Energy in Lighting
    2. To improve Quality of Light.

III. Process of Implementation TopΛ
  • To replace the magnetic ballasts in all the FTL fittings with “Intelux” Active Power Factor Correcting (APFC) electronic ballasts (having constant light output for 150V-265V and low harmonics – THD<10%).
  • We recommend “Intelux” 2x36W APFC ballasts tuned to 28W per lamp (56W total consumption) and use high lumen triphosphor lamps (“GE” Polylux) for 2x36W FTL fittings. Similarly, for 1x36W FTL fittings 28W tuned 1x36W APFC ballasts and Triphosphor lamps are suggested. For rest of the fittings, “Intelux” ballasts of regular (full) wattages and use of existing lamps is proposed.
  • With the proposed lighting schemes the existing illumination (lux) levels would be maintained.

IV. Payback Calculations TopΛ

V. Project Highlights TopΛ
On the implementation of above suggestions, we envisage following output.
Arrow Energy savings per year - Rs. 2,73,688.00
Arrow Total Investment - Rs. 4,35,301.00
Arrow Overall Payback - 1.59 years
Arrow Expected Ballast Life - 10.68 years
Arrow Net Savings during ballast life - Rs. 24,88,719.00

VI. Outcome of the Project TopΛ
  • Improved quality of light
       – Constant light output free from stroboscopic effect (light close to day light) with “Intelux” APFC ballasts
       – Improved Color Rendering by use of Triphosphor lamps (CRI-85)
  • Electronic Ballasts have low losses (e.g. 4W for 36W FTL as against 10W with low loss magnetic ballasts). This generates less heat, thereby reducing load on air conditioning (A.C.) equipments. Therefore, there would be additional energy savings in A.C.
  • “Intelux” APFC ballasts provide constant wattage operation. The lamp life is thus protected and enhanced. In case of Triphosphor lamps the lamp life is declared to be 18000 hours with electronic ballasts. Thus in comparison with existing halophosphate lamps with magnetic ballasts, the increase in life is from 5000 hours to 18000. Thus lamp life achieved would more than three times the present lamp life. Lamp replacements would thus be considerably reduced.
  • Starters and capacitors are not required with electronic ballasts. Thus maintenance costs would reduce.
